- Change the Text Color in Microsoft Word. Click the 'Text Highlight Color' icon in the Highlight Color menu to change the cursor to a highlighter. Then, just click and hold as you drag over the lines of text you want to highlight. Apply a Standard Color Theme.
- You can apply a different color, apply a texture or picture instead of color, or change settings for patterns and gradients. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Background group, click Page Color.

How can I create additional colors for MS Word's Highlight Feature? Of the dozen that exist, too many are too dark to be used and don't match the colors in the choices. Short of new, less saturated colors, is there some way to tweek the ones there to lighten them up?
For some reason, whenever I create a Text Box and start typing, the background text is highlighted white and I can't make it transparent. This picture should explain everything:
I want to remove the highlighting so the gradient in the background shows through. I used to do things like this a lot, but for some reason Word won't let me now. Any suggestions?
I am on Word 2011 Mac

Right-click the text box that you want to make invisible.
1 If you want to change multiple text boxes, click the first text box or shape, and then press and hold SHIFT while you click the other text boxes.
2 On the shortcut menu, click Format Text Box.
3 On the Colors and Lines tab, in the Fill section, click the arrow next to Color, and then click No Color.
4 On the Colors and Lines tab, in the Line section, click the arrow next to Color, and then click No Color.
5 Click OK. Your textbox's background is now invisible... happy New Year's Eve!
It seems the actual text highlight is your problem, so try:
Go into borders and shading, apply it to text, and set it to clear. Had me confused because I've never had to do this before. Thanks for the response anyway! – applemavs 5 hours ago
As seen here, in a small google search... next time, you do the same!
CilanCilanI also searched around and had trouble finding this.
In Word for Mac 2011
- Highlight the text
- Click tables in the ribbon
- Find the shading icon (looks like a paint bucket)
- Click the down arrow next to the bucket and select
No Fill
Got some clues here and finally found a solution for MSWord for Mac version 16.9:
- Select the text you want to fix
- Select 'Design' Tab
- Click 'Page Borders'
- Click the 'Shading' Tab
- Select Apply to 'Text'
- [Fill] is showing 'No Color'. Open the selection and re-select 'No Color'
- Hit 'OK'
Worked for me. It is obviously a bug in Word.

Word 2016 comes with a digital highlighter pen that lets you mark up and colorize the text in your document without damaging the computer’s monitor. To highlight text, abide by these steps:
Color For Microsoft Word
Click the Home tab.
In the Font group, click the Text Highlight button.
Word is now in Highlighting mode.
Drag the mouse over the text you want to highlight.
The text becomes highlighted — just as if you used a highlighter on regular paper but far neater.
Click the Text Highlight button again to return the mouse to normal operation.
Or press the Esc key to exit Highlighting mode.
The highlight doesn’t necessarily need to be yellow. Click the menu button to the right of the Text Highlight button, and choose a different highlighter color from the palette displayed.

To remove highlighting from your text, highlight it again in the same color. If that doesn’t work, choose None as the highlight color and then drag the mouse over any color of highlighted text to remove the highlight.
To highlight multiple chunks of text, double-click the Text Highlight button. The mouse pointer stays in highlighting mode until you click the Text Highlight button again or press the Esc key.
To highlight a block of text, mark the block and then click the Highlight button that appears on the mini toolbar.
Highlighting isn’t the background color.
The highlighted text prints, so be careful with it. If you don’t have a color printer, highlighted text prints in black or gray on hard copy.
