My mouse (a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000) has smooth scroll (I can't turn it off) which means using the mouse wheel to change items is not ideal, sometimes it doesn't register the wheel turn, other times it registers it as 3.

I'm not aware of a way to remap the scroll wheel within Minecraft, so I think your best bet is to look for third-party tools that will remap your mouse keys for you. After a quick Google search, I found X-Mouse Button Control for Windows, and USB Overdrive for Mac.

Looking at screenshots of both programs, they both allow you to remap mouse buttons as mouse wheel up {MWUP} and mouse wheel down {MWDN}, which is perfect for item-switching in Minecraft.

I think he means it would be nice that the PC accepts the function of a 6th and 7th mouse button, because its easier to map it to other programs that accept a button as a button and not a keystroke!

well there is something that exists that when plugging the mouse into it accepts buutons , not keyboard remapping, more like button 1 is what I want it to be in a program or maybe button 1 is button 7! but thats not possible because we only have button 5! which is pointless if a program accepts only button response and not keyboard response due to the mouse as a device!

when a mouse has more buttons why doesnt microsoft have the ability to recognise that the (device) has more buttons???? I have a mouse with 20 buttons and, Oh only 5 are accepted and the rest I have to program so that they are keys from a keyboard!!! that sucks! I want do do what I want otherwise all the mice out there that have more than 5 buttons, in a way, futile to redesign!
